Challenger I
After getting bored in a recital hearing percussion instruments being played very soft, I decided to write a drum solo, with Heavy Metal grooves and techniques, that was designed to be played hard, really, really hard.
The name of this piece reflects the difficult to play and also the British war tank ‘FV4030/4 – Challenger I’.
The score explore some ‘war themes’ like gunfire, explosions, a motor running and the movement of a tank. As the war machine it is named after, it is not fast, but consistent and heavy.
